AOSM 2009

WELCOME TO AMAZING THAILAND

The theme of AOSM 2009 is “REACHING OUT”. How appropriate for what is happening in AA Thailand right now.  We of the AA community in Thailand and surrounding countries welcome the participants to AOSM 2009 July 23-26, 2009. Thailand has only been involved in AOSM since 2005 but are full partners in the spirit and values expressed by AOSM. The growth of AA in Thailand has two separate stories but both are inspiring. The story of English speaking or “Westeners” AA and the story of Thai AA. The “reaching out” has gone both ways and the two stories are melding into one great story.

Just one example from the English speaking side of the story: Pattaya, a seaside resort town noted for bars, etc. had only 3 meetings a week five years ago. Today you can go to meetings morning, noon, and night 7 days a week for a total of 25 meetings a week. We, jokingly of course, call Pattaya “The Holy City”. The bars are still here but you can get sober and stay sober here as well as any other place in Asia. Not so long ago AA was found only in Bangkok but has spread to 12 locations throughout the country. Check website www.aathailand.org

From the Thai side of the story, the numbers are even more astounding. From zero five years ago, one little mustard seed has grown into 8 Thai language meetings. Thailand has been searching for a solution to the alcohol problems that plague almost all Thai families. From one small treatment center in Khon Kaen in upcountry Thailand, where reaching out from one English speaking AA member has led to today’s daily meetings in Thai for Thai alcoholics. For the first time Thailand had success in getting some alcoholics sober.  Our Cooperation with the Professional Community (CPC Committee) has been very active in spreading the message to the Thai community who is hungry for information about AA.  This past July we just had the 4th Annual Isaan (Northeast) Roundup in Khon Kaen which is predominately Thai participation. In August we had the 2nd Annual Hua Hin (West Coast)Roundup hosted by the English speaking AA group but half the participants were Thai.

We have two Thai AA members in Thailand Intergroup. We are preparing for our 14th Annual Thai Roundup to be held February 2009. Our theme is “Came to Believe” and the logo is 100% Thai. The first Roundup had only one Thai person in attendance and now more than 70 Thais attend every year. We expect 400 folks from 30 countries this February 2009. You are all invited to come visit us for great fellowship and you can see first hand “reaching out” in action. We are so delighted to host AOSM here in The Land of Smiles. The Thai greeting is called a “wai” (pronounced “why”) hands together in a prayer position with head slightly bowed.  Here is our “wai” to you and the other “why” is to carry the message!

A. A. 's Preamble describes Alcoholics Anonymous as "a Fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism." That process, at the heart of how A. A. . works, happens between individuals, in groups at A. A. meetings, and indeed whenever and wherever sober alcoholics gather.

AOSM is a zonal meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. The meeting was created to share experience, strength and hope among the participating countries helping them to establish, grow and unify AA in the Asia and Pacific area. Sponsorship of developing countries by more established countries helps to reach the hand of A. A. ever further out to help others to achieve sobriety.

Held since 1995, the AOSM occurs every two years, rotating throughout the region in odd years.

I am responsible
When anyone, anywhere reaches out for help,
I want the hand of A. A. to be there
And for that, I am responsible.

Preamble

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A. A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A. A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
